Comcast customers may experience video buffering from time to time. This is a common problem that Comcast customers may experience from time to t time. Fortunately, there are things you can try to improve video playback and diminish buffering when it occurs.

What is the Cause of Buffering?

This is a loaded question. As a Comcast customer, when you experience buffering it is a result of many different factors. Some factors may affect or cause buffering more than others at any given time. However, in general, buffering is caused by computer, browser, and network capacity. As you stream video, the video streams are designed to accommodate a variety of different quality levels to ensure that you receive the best quality signal as you stream. Even your video player plays a role in picture quality and buffering. It will adjust your video stream based on your network's capacity, graphics, CPU/memory utilization, all based on the capabilities of your computer. In essence, buffering is primarily the cause of network constraints in addition to all the other factors mentioned.

Before You Stream...

If possible, use a hard-wired network connection instead of WiFi. If you must rely on WiFI take steps to ensure that you have a strong signal. You may need to refresh or reset the connection from time to time. If possible, make sure there are no other applications utilizing your internet connection and make sure you're using the latest version of your browser. Also, before you begin streaming, clear your browser cache. Another beneficial step is to ensure that you have the latest version of Adobe Flash Player.

If Buffering is STILL a Problem...

If you've followed all the steps to ensure that you have a successful, buffer-free stream yet you still have problems, there are things you can do. Keep in mind that buffering is usually caused by network constraints. In response, you can reboot your router, computer, tablet, or phone. Position yourself closer to the router if possible. Plus, close any programs running in the background that may be eating up your bandwidth. Keep in mind that typical background programs include social networks like Facebook and Instagram, which typically run in the background. Your collaboration tools should be considered as well. You can also try disabling hardware acceleration in your browser's streaming settings. Some combinations of devices and streaming platforms are problematic when they are run together. You may also consider using a backup connection simultaneously to prevent these lags or issues with streaming. You may want to consider using a channel bonding service like Speedify. This may create a more consistent and stable connection.
