If you have found you are being charged for a purchase you didn't make with your Chase card, you can dispute the transaction. Before you file a dispute with Chase, though, you should contact the merchant to try to work it out. If you can't, it's pretty easy to dispute the charge with Chase. You can either fill out an online form or call Chase's customer service.

So you've noticed that there's a charge on your Chase account that shouldn't be there. You're sure you didn't make that charge, so it must be fraudulent. This article will teach you how to dispute the charge with Chase so you aren't required to pay it.

Before Disputing the Charge

Before you dispute the transaction in question, you should make absolutely sure that the charge is fraudulent. Make sure that none of the authorized users of your Chase account is responsible for it. Once you are sure, contact the merchant involved in the transaction. He or she has access to your purchase information and might be able to resolve the matter much faster.

Disputing the Charge With Chase Online

If you have no luck working things out with the merchant, it's time to dispute the charge with Chase. Follow the steps below:

  1. Go to the Chase web page.
  2. Sign in to your Chase account.
  3. Go to your Accounts page.
  4. Scroll down to you reach the Recent Activity section. You will see a list of your cards.
  5. Select the card with the transaction you want to dispute.
  6. Select the account. If the disputed charge was on a debit card, select your checking account.
  7. Locate the transaction you want to dispute.
  8. Click on the arrow next to that transaction. You will be taken to a Transaction Details page.
  9. Click on Dispute Transaction.
  10. Click on No if the merchant has not already fixed the issue.
  11. Click on Next. You will be taken to the Let's Get Started page.
  12. Select your reason for disputing the transaction. Different questions will appear based on the selection you made.
  13. Answer the questions.
  14. Click on Submit Dispute.
  15. Click on Done.

Disputing the Charge With Chase by Phone

Instead of filling out the online form, you can dispute the charge by phone if you want. All you need to do is call Chase's customer service department. Be sure to have the following information with you when you call: date of transaction, amount of transaction, location of the transaction, and transaction number.

After Initiating the Dispute

After you initiate the dispute, Chase will begin its investigation, starting with contacting the merchant. During the investigation, you won't need to pay the transaction, fees, or interest. After Chase has finished its investigation, it will either cancel the charge or let it stand. If the company decides to let the charge stand, you will have to pay it and any fees and interest that may apply.
